How James Transportation Built a Family-First Carrier Business

September 14, 2026

For Randolph James, President of James Transportation, success isn’t just measured in miles; it’s measured in relationships, family, and keeping his word.

After spending 20 years managing eight locations and 120 employees for KFC, James decided it was time for a change. Following a conversation with a friend about the trucking industry, he took a bold leap of faith: he bought his first truck, went to school to get his CDL license, and launched James Transportation out of Connecticut in 2007.

“Never looked back since then,” James said.

The Work Ethic Behind the Wheel

Building a carrier business from the ground up requires relentless dedication. For James, that often means rolling out as early as 2:00 AM. His wife, Claudia, is there every step of the way, even waking up early to talk with him on long morning drives to keep him sharp.

That structure and discipline stem from a simple truth in transportation: “If the wheel’s not rolling, there’s no money being made,” James said.

With over 2.3 million miles under his belt across 18 years, James understands the vital role truck drivers play in keeping the country moving. But keeping those wheels turning requires more than just fuel; it requires trust.

Reputation is Everything

In the freight world, reliability is your currency. James built his business around a simple philosophy: honor your word.

“My business is my reputation,” he said. “If I give my word, then my word is what you’re standing by… Trust is a big thing when it comes to trucking. Because when there’s no trust, the wheels can’t keep going.”

To James, successful freight moves rely on strong partnerships between carriers and brokers who treat each other as a team working toward the same goal.

A True Carrier-Driven Partnership

When you’re on the road, waiting an hour on hold for a broker isn’t an option. Having direct, open communication makes all the difference in keeping loads moving smoothly.

Working with Spot and dedicated account representatives, James and his team know they always have a support system in their corner without long waits or endless transfers.

“Spot is thinking about we, the carriers, more than anything else,” James said. “It takes a good carrier company and a good broker as a team to get the job done. Being carrier-driven means actually having a relationship… it’s almost like a family member.”

At the end of the day, James’ motivation always circles back to what matters most: his family, his grandkids, and the strong foundation he’s built both on and off the road.
