What Others Won’t: Handled with Care

October 1, 2026

When a shipper meets a complex logistics obstacle, true partnership goes far beyond answering phone calls from behind a desk. It requires rolling up your sleeves, traveling to the source, and taking direct accountability on the warehouse floor.

For Spot’s Senior National Account Director, Chey West, that commitment was put to the test when a key client reached out with a high-stakes challenge involving cross-border glass shipments and strict regulatory enforcement.

The Challenge: Navigating the California Bridge Law

The client was evaluating a major initiative: importing heavy glass products from a manufacturing facility in Mexico through California ports of entry. However, cross-border freight moving into California must comply with the California Bridge Law.

This regulation governs the distance between the trailer kingpin and the rear tandem axles to protect highway infrastructure. While critical for road safety, setting tandem positions to follow the law severely limits a carrier’s ability to adjust trailer weight distribution. Because glass is exceptionally dense and heavy, early shipments repeatedly triggered weight violations at the border, leaving the entire supply chain route stalled.

Initial collaboration between supply chain managers and warehouse engineers helped, but remote troubleshooting was not enough to solve the issue. The client asked West to step in as a dedicated transportation advisor and fly directly to Mexico to evaluate the operation firsthand.

On-site Problem Solving in Mexico

Upon arriving at the client’s manufacturing facility, the priority was to conduct rigorous testing, while cutting every unnecessary operational variable:

  • Standardizing Transportation Setup: Arranged dedicated trucking companies and specific drivers to maintain a consistent baseline throughout the trial.
  • Testing Load Configurations: Designed and executed two distinct loading patterns inside the trailer, carefully balancing cargo weight relative to mandatory tandem placements.
  • Measuring Real-World Data: Sent each test trailer directly to certified scales to analyze axle-by-axle weight distribution data in real time.

Compounding Savings & Lasting Trust

The testing paid off immediately. By finding a custom loading pattern that satisfied California Bridge Law requirements without exceeding axle limits, the team achieved remarkable gains:

  • Increased Capacity: Maximized trailer efficiency by adding two extra pallets per trailer.
  • Significant Cost Savings: The per-trailer efficiency gains compounded rapidly across the entire bid cycle.

Beyond the immediate financial return, putting “skin in the game” yielded three consecutive Carrier of the Year awards and a nomination for Supplier of the Year. More than accolades, it proved how hands-on expertise builds genuine, lasting client trust.
