This year marks 14 years as an organization. I can vividly remember arriving on a frigid day at 4:00 a.m. to a 1,200 sq. ft. office with three card tables (desks), three computers, three screens, three phones, non-working steam heat, a recession, little money, no business cards, and a phone system with seven options and only three people to answer. It would take five long hours that day until our first load moved, and our journey officially began.
Almost all new business ventures start with promises of “service,” “commitment,” “technology,” or some form of the “new way.” As a bootstrapped organization with no outside money in a very crowded market, we set out with a very focused plan built on what we called the “controllables” at the height of the great recession. We devised four simple things we promised to deliver that didn’t require capital or technology, but we hoped to build our reputation.

Over the next 14 years, we learned a lot. We know that life is complex, plans change, and things don’t always go as expected.
